Learning Styles

On Nov 14, E., our group member, gave us a presentation on learning styles. She reported to the group that prior to preparing for this presentation, she thought that there were only 3 learning styles - audio, kinesthetic, and visual. However, during her research she learned that there are more learning styles that are listed below:
  • Visual
  • Audio - musical
  • Kinesthetic
  • Verbal
  • Logical - mathematical
  • Social - interpersonal
  • Solitary
E. pointed out that most people do not use only one style, but instead have preference for several that come naturally to them. E. informed the group that research shows that the more styles of learning you use, the better you will learn. She encouraged group members to "force" themselves to use not only their favorite learning styles, but also those that do not come easily to them. She mentioned her own tendency towards solitary learning, stating that she might be able to learn more and differently if she exposed herself more to social learning.

E. also let the group know that the learning style you use can alter the information that you learn. For example, a visual learner might recall the same piece of information differently as compared to the audio learner. Therefore, using a variety of learning styles will help you to remember the information from various "angles," so to say, which again leads to better learning.

E. emphasized the importance of keeping your brain in a good shape for better learning. She mentioned to the group that exercising, including doing exercises that promote physical balance, eating food reach in antioxidants, and learning new skills are "good for your brain." She told the group that now that she knows the importance of building new neuronal networks in your brain by doing different things, she is more willing to engage in new activities, even if they are not too enjoyable, as doing new things is "good for the brain."
